چکیده

Methods currently used in South Africa for determining the reactions of new sugarcane clones to smut, mosaic, leaf scald and streak during the process d selection are described and results from recent trials are presented. Resistance screening procedures have been expanded and improved in recent years. The main changes have been the regional location of trials involving the different diseases, screening for resistance to smut and mosaic at earlier stages in the plant breeding selection programme, so that many more new clones are now tested, and the routine use of in~oculation techniques in screening for resistance to smut and leaf scald. Numbers of new clones screened for disease resistance annually are approximately 560 for smut, 200 for mosaic, and 40 for leaf scald and streak. The reactions of advanced clones from all selection sites to the four diseases are assessed at least once before the clones are considered for release. Approximately 50% of the clones tested for response to smut and mosaic prove to be too susceptible for use in areas where these diseases are common. The proportion of clones in the final stages of selection that are resistant to smut has increased recently due to intensive screening at earlier stages in the plant breeding programme.

Use of Varieties to Minimise Losses from Sugarcane Diseases in South Africa

The current low incidence of sugarcane diseases in the South African sugar industry has been hardwon. This achievement is due largely to the selection and release of resistant varieties. Consequently, current estimates of crop loss due to smut and mosaic indicate reductions in yield of only 0.2% in total, equivalent to R7 million per annum. In the absence of an RSD variety resistance screening ...

Conventional Sugarcane Breeding in South Africa: Progress and Future Prospects

Initial sugarcane production in South Africa relied on imported varieties. When imported varieties succumbed to diseases, the industry established the South African Research Institute (SASRI) with the mandate to develop sugarcane varieties. The popular and highly successful varieties, NCo310 and NCo376 were selected from crosses imported from India. NCo310 and NCo376 were grown successfully in ...

The Use of Tissue Blots to Screen for Varietal Resistance to Ratoon Stunting Disease of Sugarcane

No trials are currently conducted at SASEX to screen genotypes for resistance to ratoon stunting disease (RSD), a disease that is well established in most sugarcane growing regions of the world and considered to cause more yield losses worldwide than any other sugarcane disease. In South Africa, field trials have demonstrated that yield reductions under rainfed conditions can be as high as 40% ...

Screening of New Sugarcane Genotypes for Resistance to Red Rot (glomerella Tucumanensis)

Preliminary investigations in South Africa into determining the resistance of sugarcane varieties to red rot (Glomerella tucumanensis) by means of an inoculation procedure, conducted in 1988-89, showed promise. Results of these trials, together with findings from industry-wide red rot surveys in the late 1980s, were used to provide a preliminary ranking of a number of released varieties. Variet...

Extraction of Hemicellulose and Lignin from Sugarcane Bagasse for Biopolymer Films: Green Process

A hemicellulose is any of several heteropolymers , such as arabinoxylans, present along with cellulose in almost all plant cell walls. Hemicellulose has a random, amorphous structure with little strength. It is easily hydrolyzed by dilute acid or base as well as myriad hemicellulase enzymes. In this study, lignin and hemicellulose was extracted from sugarcane bagasse using the ammonium hydrolys...
